The age of the verifiable: why the real thing will beat the smoke
China just found out that thousands of restaurants on its delivery apps don't exist. Not that they look dodgy. They literally don't exist: ghost kitchens, invented addresses, generated photos, fake reviews.
And here's the interesting part: this isn't about food.
It's about the fact that we're entering an era where verifying what's real costs more than faking it. With AI you can set up a "restaurant", an "ecommerce store" or an "agency" in twenty minutes. Nice website, perfect photos, convincing testimonials. All of it a lie.
The filter stops being technological
For years, trust was an automatic filter. If you had a website, reviews and followers, you looked real, because manufacturing all that took effort. That effort was the barrier.
AI just knocked the barrier down. When building the facade costs four euros, the facade no longer proves anything. The filter goes from technological to human: is there an actual person behind this? Can I talk to a real customer? Can I see the process, not just the result?
How I apply it
When someone pitches me something, I do three things:
- I look for a real trail. Not followers, not a website. Customers I can call.
- I ask to see the process, not the result. The pretty part can be manufactured; the ugly part can't.
- If everything is too perfect, I get suspicious. Real businesses have scars.
The opportunity for anyone building
If the facade no longer counts, the competitive advantage of the next decade is being verifiably real. And that gets built:
- Document the process, not just the result. People want to see the how, because the what can now be manufactured by any model.
- Put a name and a face on everything: team, customers, suppliers. Opacity is a red flag now.
- Add friction where everyone else adds automation. A call before selling, a human onboarding, a manual check. What used to be "not scalable" is today what sets you apart.
The next decade won't be won by whoever looks best. It'll be won by whoever is still real when everything else is smoke.
And that is exactly the thesis we build on at VIVIO: in influencer marketing, an industry full of inflated metrics, what is measurable and verifiable is the only thing worth anything.
